The accounting profession is one of the jobs that increases transparency and accountability for companies and governments throughout the world. The role of the accountant, according to Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati, is very important in improving the quality of financial statements because it is the main spearhead of every institution. This is because the quality of information from financial statements is very important to find out how much financial risk is faced. "Integrity is the main capital for every profession, including accounting, to ensure the credibility of financial statements.The lack of integrity will result in a systemic impact on the economy and social life, "Sri Mulyani said when she was a panelist at the World Accountant Congress in an official statement on Tuesday (11/06/2018). In Indonesia, policy transparency reforms began after the 1998 economic crisis. The issuance of three packages of laws relating to state finance in 2003 and 2004 (the State Finance Act, the State Treasury Law and the State Examination Act) has changed the management order state financial system to realize good governance.
Previously, in the 2001 National survey for households and businesses, the Directorate General (DG) of Customs and Excise became the second most corrupt institution in Indonesia, while the Directorate General of Taxation was in fifth place. "These two institutions, together with other first echelon units, have become the main focus of the bureaucratic reform program since 2006," said the Minister of Finance.
As a result, in 2017, the Directorate General of Taxes received an anti-corruption award. In 2018, the contact center of the Directorate General of Customs and Excise received the top ten awards for managing call centers in Indonesia. The Ministry of Finance has also become a role model from other Ministries for the reform process in Indonesia. The main key to the reformation that Sri Mulyani emphasized to her staff was transparency. "The key to success of bureaucratic reform is commitment and full support from the highest leadership about the desire to reform, support from all stakeholders, and the third is support from professional associations that make the government more transparent in managing state finances," he said.
He said, now the Indonesian economy is getting better. In the past four years, Indonesia's economic growth has grown stably with an average of 5.04 percent. Minister of Finance said, several programs carried out in support of the principles of transparency, accountability and good governance, among others, with investments in human capital, made the younger generation as the capital of economic growth, infrastructure development to accelerate the economy, and equitable development including village funds
